about H.S.P.

This is my story about my incredible journey with the Lap-Band. I will try to keep it short and sweet but I LOVE to talk about my Band!!!! I am by no means a closet bandster. You ask and I will talk! So hang on here I go!!

I read about the Lap-Band in a paper I never usually read. For some reason I picked it up and leafed through it. There was an article about Lap-Band -vs- Bypass. I think Bypass is wonderful but I just didn't think it was for me. I know many people who have had it with terrific results. I Just felt it was not for me. There was a Number to call so I called and talked to them about it and then went to my first seminar where a Dr. from Mexico talked about the Gastric Lap-band. It sounded like just the tool I needed. I then went to another seminar with Dr. Robert Berger who was starting a bariatric program in Flagstaff, Arizona. I made an appointment with them and that is where it all began for me. My new life was begining.  I went to see a nutritionist, Had a psychiatric interview, several appointments with Dr.Berger, then my surgery was scheduled!!

My Lap-Band surgery was scheduled for Tuesday November 16,2004 with
Dr. Robert Berger in Flagstaff. AZ.(#1 surgeon if you ask me.) I was so excited! I started the dreaded 10 day liquid diet on the 6th of November. I think that was actually the hardest part about the whole experience. It was a very hard diet to follow. When I first read what I could have I sat down and cried. I didn't think I could do it. I have some wonderful friends who helped me through it and even tried the diet with me, but they only lasted 2 days. That's ok, I decided I COULD DO IT!  I never even cheated once.I just knew that if I did that Dr. Berger would know and cancel my surgery. I could not let that happen.
On November 8th. Dr. Berger's Nurse Nancy Scott (#1 in my book) called and told me that the hospital needed to reschedule my surgery for Wed. the 17th.  I was very disapointed but it was only 1 day.
I went to flagstaff on Friday Nov. 12th for my pre-op tests. EKG, upper GI, chest x-ray, blood work, pee test. you know all that fun stuff! Then on the 15th I got another call from Nancy Scott saying I had a bladder infection and I had to be on antibiotics to clear up the infection before I could have surgery. So surgery was again rescheduled for Friday November 19th. I sat down and cried again,  My 10 day liquid diet now turned into a 14 day liquid diet. Yuck!  Oh well I survived and I even lost 11lbs that 14 days.
I had to go in for a pee test on the 18th to make sure everything was cleared up. I held my breath until the morning of surgery when Dr. Berger came in and said everything was good.

This is one of my favorite funnies. It says...
"Don't step on it, it makes you cry!"
How true, until now!!!

I can finaly look in the mirror and not cringe.

My new life began on Friday November 19,2004. I had to check in at the hospital at 6:00a.m. When I arrived they took me back to the pre-op room and started the IV's or at least they tried to start them. It took 3 nurses and several stabs each to get one IV in. The other one I was told they put in when I was out before surgery. They said my veins moved around. They gave me a shot in my IV before I was moved to OR and it made me very dizzy. Which I was told was very normal. I remember being wheeled into the OR and the nurses putting on the pressure boots(I quess that's what they are called?). I think I remember Dr. Berger coming over and talking to me for a second but I'm kind of fuzzy on that. But that's all I remember until I heard someone call my name. At first I was very mad thinking "I wish they would just get this over with!!" Then the nurse said "Terri, it's all over" WOW!! I was in NO pain! I felt great just tired. I was in surgery under 2 hours and in recovery about the same. I was taken to my room and still have little to no pain. It really only hurt when I moved wrong. The nurses kept asking me if I wanted something for the pain but I didn't need it. I think they had some in my IV but again Not sure.

I went in for a upper GI a little while after surgery to make sure things were working fine. That is when I had the pain. Laying flat on that table was terrible! It hurt like heck! But everything was fine as I knew it would be because I have the worlds best surgeon!!!
Ok, back to my room and sitting on the side of my bed I got to have my first meal as a bandster!! Chicken broth, lemon jello and juice. I am not a fan of broth or jello but it tasted pretty good to me then.
Dr. Berger wanted me to try and walk and the nurses were so busy that they kept telling me "soon". Dr. Berger found out and was not very happy. They did have me sitting up on the side of the bed. Since it is hard for me to walk on a normal day. My walk came very much later.
I couldn't sleep that night. I mean not even a little. There was an ice maching right outside of my room. We all know how popular they are in a hospital. That and my room mate was up walking around most of the night. At around 4a.m. I called the nurse to help me to the bathroom. I hadn't gone pee since before my surgery at 7a.m. 21 hours ago!! YIKES! I didn't think anything about it because I hadn't drank much at all. Not thinking about all the IV fluids that they have been putting in me. I couldn't go no matter how hard I tried. The night nurse called Dr. Berger and told him and he told her to put in a catheter. 5 hours later I had it removed and Dr. Berger told me I couldn't go home until I could go on my own. My check out time was now put on hold. About 4 hours later the nurse finaly came to take me on a little walk down the hall. We thought that with a little movement everything might start moving? I did finally go a little so Dr. Berger said that If I was happy then he was happy!

I left the hospital Saturday Nov 20th at about 2:00 p.m.  The trip home was a little rough but it felt so good to be home!
I went back to Flagstaff on the 24th (down 10lbs already!) and Dr. Berger said I could go back to work after Thanksgiving. Monday the 29th I returned to work. I was feeling very good. Still on a liquid diet but everything was going great!!!
      I LOVE MY BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has now been over 2 years and I am down over 100lbs.
I have had no complication. Just Gall Bladder removal which is pretty common with the weight loss. Or so I'm told. That surgery was a piece of cake! Which is a whole nother story I wont get in to now.
See I told you I loved to talk about my band journey. Please contact me with any questions or comments. This is the first site I have done so I am just learning as I go. Thank you for listening!!!
